Using Software Update is faster and easier than upgrading by other methods, and it might require less storage space to download and install the upgrade. Software Update shows only upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.

I am unable to get past step 1 of upgrading to any version of Sierra. There are no updates in the App Store - selecting "Software Update" in "About this Mac" has also yielded a "No Updates Available" message. To attempt a workaround, I downloaded the v 10.12.1 package installer, which gave me the error message "This update requires OS X version 10.12." - to my knowledge, no such version exists.
This is part of a comedy of compatibility errors, as the entire endeavor has been in order to use the beta version of XCode, as the version in the App Store gets stuck in an infinite loop and won't even download! This is on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) - not sure if anyone else has had any luck.
Base OSs are only available from the MAS for those that downloaded them in the past. Go there, check your history. If you don't have the base in your history, you can't get it on demand/at will as new installs are no longer being signed.
That is very much not supported. Do not do that. If you're staying on macOS 10.11.6, the latest supported Xcode is 8.2.x. If you want to use something newer, you need to upgrade to macOS 10.12.6 or newer via the Mac App Store.
Having the same issue on a mid-2011 iMac currently running 10.12.6. I found and downloaded the 10.13.6 combo update installer. However, it tells me that I need 13.1 installed in order to run the 10.13.6 combo update installer. So it won't do the upgrade. Is there a different installer, such as a non-combo update, that I need to use?

You have downloaded and attempted to install an 'update' to macOS Sierra, from which you would have needed to have a previous version of macOS Sierra (probably 10.12.3, or prior version if it was the Combo update) installed.
As you are on El Capitan and you want to go to Sierra that is called an 'upgrade' and you can only upgrade to macOS Sierra via the App Store, the version that is available at the moment is 10.12.4, which is the full installer.
I don't recommend you jump to Sierra 10.12.4 yet has a big issues about e-mail, conectivity and the most critical teh mac crash an all in the screen stop even the mouse point any app respond and the only solution is force turn off with the button of turn on/off, if you can update to Sierra 10.12.3 that work correct.
